My story - fantasy research

Fairy tales and Fantasy has remained throughout time. Folklore,Moral tales and Fantasy worlds have always been used to shape and enthrall our children.

I choose to consider various stories i that i remeber from my childhood, and the ones that meant most to me.

  • The Little Mermaid

  • Snow White

  • The 3 Bears

  • Cinderella

  • Beauty and the Beast

  • Little Red Riding Hood

  • Alice in Wonderland

After reminding myself of various stories i researched into other tales that i could adapt.

'The Jackal and the Spring' - an african tale.

All the rivers and streams ran dry.The animals ug a well to keep from dying, but the jackel did not help. They set up a guard to keep the Jackel from drinking. The first, a rabbit, kept off the jackal until it bribed it with some honeycomb to let it tie it up; then the jackal drank its full. The second, a hare, met the same fate. The third, the tortoise, did not answer the jackal, so it thought it could kick it aside, but the tortoise grabbed its leg and never let it go. The jackal did not manage to free itself until the other animals appeared; then it managed to wrench itself free and flee without drinking.

The moral

The Jackel was crafty and expected others to work for him, the others did not intend for this to happen and tired to prevent it. Some were easily bribed, however the tortoise stood strong and with the support and admiration of the others the Jackel fled.

I think its an important aspect to retain the moral message in a fairy tale. This is something i would like to show through my opening sequence.

Adapting?

  • Story

  • Protanganist

  • Story statement

  • Ending

Story Concept

main plot points - these are the begin of a structure for my story.

  • Younger brother is doted upon

  • Jackal and young brother meet

  • Build relationship

  • Friends and hero become aware of the bond

  • Rabbit hastily confronts the Jackal

  • Jackal convinces Rabbit to back down

  • Jackal's intentions are revealed to hero

  • Jackal is threatened by Hare, but is eventually convinced

  • Hero/Tortoise waits for Jackal to approach him

  • When Jackal does he is ready, and reveal to brother Jackals evil intentions.

Character

In this story i felt a key element was character and the relationships between characters. The protagonist, the tortoise is the obstruction to the jackel. He alone shows the courage to stop him.

  • Jackal - antagonist

  • Tortoise - protagonist

Protagonist Tortosie

  • 'comes out of shell' - so to speak

  • quiet, is dishearted by others ingoring his voice so stays quite away

  • as story progresses speaks more and more of his mind

Story mood board

-----

After a group meeting and comparing stories we found we all used the element of relationships and the theme of siblings

From this we've develop an idea from Iman's story or Little Blue because of its stronger and more classic fantasy themes, and are adapting it into our picth.
